Dad’s Ode - by Alan Jefferies (son)
A while ago in the clubs beginning
There was a man who just kept winning.
Out every Sunday keen to fish
A good weight “on whistle” to be his wish.
On arrival, eyed up his pegged out swim
Used years of knowledge, not a whim.
The flow, the colour, a plan to hatch
What style and bait to win the match.
The ISIS badge was his design
Club water maps drawn scale to align.
He also wrote an Ode or two
Of fishing ”characters” he knew,
Your guess is as good as mine of who
Was it John, Dave or even Hugh?
3 times fished Nationals Championship,
And a worthy life time membership.
Many years a committee member,
And the record Bream to remember.
The committee have a space to fill
As he became more gravely ill.
7 times club champion
Many a Xmas match he won
And the prize of Turkey, the top one.
Club mates cried “not again this year”
But colleagues now needn’t fear
For sadly “Bert’s” no longer here!
